Note: Medicare beneficiaries limited to noninstitutionalized population (e.g., excludes those in nursing homes) age 65 and older.

a. An odds ratio > 1 indicates elderly Medicare beneficiaries with this characteristic were more likely not to have purchased at least one prescription drug in 2001 because of cost. Similarly, those with an odds ratio < 1 were less likely not to have purchased at least one prescription drug in 2001 because of cost. For example, an odds ratio of 1.61 for African Americans shows that African Americans were significantly more likely than non-Hispanic whites to report not purchasing one prescription drug.

b. Individuals were classified as having a chronic condition if they reported seeing a doctor or other health professional for at least one of the following conditions in the past two years: diabetes, arthritis, asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), coronary heart disease (includes angina, arterial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, bypass surgery, angioplasty, heart disease, myocardial infarction), hypertension, cancer and/or depression.
