As the importance of prescription drugs in medical care continues to grow, policy makers increasingly will confront the challenge of making medications affordable and accessible to all Americans. Recent state and federal debates have focused on the prescription drug needs of the elderly in Medicare, but many other Americans, including Medicaid beneficiaries, can’t afford to fill prescriptions, according to a new national study from the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC).

WHAT: Media briefing on a national study about Americans’ access to prescription drugs.
WHY: Find out the latest information about who can’t afford prescription drugs.
WHEN: Tuesday, April 9, 2002, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Continental breakfast at 9 a.m.
WHERE: National Press Club, Zenger Room, 529 14th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. A toll-free call-in line also will be available for reporters.
WHO: Paul B. Ginsburg, Ph.D., HSC president; Peter J. Cunningham, Ph.D., HSC senior researcher; Leighton Ku, Ph.D., M.P.H., senior health policy fellow, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and a representative from state government.

At the media briefing, HSC will release a new Issue Brief—Prescription Drug Access: Not Just a Medicare Problem. The study is based on information from HSC’s 2000-01 Community Tracking Study Household Survey, a nationally representative survey involving approximately 60,000 people in 33,000 families.

To register for the briefing or obtain the call-in number for the briefing, contact Alwyn Cassil at (202) 264-3484 or acassil@hschange.org.
