University of California Physician Joins HSC as Visiting Senior Fellow

WASHINGTON, DC—Patrick S. Romano, M.D., M.P.H., has joined the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) as a visiting senior fellow while on sabbatical as a professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine.

A graduate of Princeton University and the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Romano completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. He also earned a master’s of public health degree at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health and served as a fellow in health services research at the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine

"Dr. Romano’s expertise in quality measurement and how to engage consumers in health care decision making will be a great asset as HSC pursues research in these areas," said HSC President Paul B. Ginsburg, Ph.D.

Romano’s research has focused on comparative evaluation of health care outcomes, the use of outcomes data to improve the quality and effectiveness of medical care, and the epidemiology of traumatic injuries and birth defects. He has received research funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the California HealthCare Foundation, among others.

His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, Health Affairs, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Medical Care, Inquiry and Health Services Research.

Romano is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Public Health Association, the Society of General Internal Medicine, AcademyHealth and the International Society for Quality in Health Care.
