California Site Visits
California is large and diverse, and health care is organized, delivered and financed differently across the state. To help inform local leaders, policymakers, the public and the media about regional differences in health care affordability, access and quality, the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) funded the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) to conduct in-depth site visits in six California regions. The site visits were conducted between October and December 2008. The six regions reflect the range of economic, demographic, health delivery, and financing conditions in California. They are the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Fresno, Los Angeles, Riverside/San Bernardino and San Diego. The site visits included interviews with local health care leaders, including representatives of health plans, hospitals, physician organizations, major employers, benefit consultants, insurance brokers, community health centers, consumer advocates, state and local policymakers, as well as other knowledgeable observers. CHCF released community
reports in July 2009. In the fall, the Foundation will release five analyses
of cross-community trends in health care delivery and finance and analyze the
implications of regional variations.
