Abstract:

y 2010, internists will practice in three managed care health plan models. In Model A, the plan will play a limited role. It will contract with one or more provider organizations for a comprehensive range of services. Each entity will organize the delivery of physician, hospital, and prescription drug services. In Model B, management of care remains with the health plan, which will develop information systems to support physicians’ practice of evidence-based medicine. It will use a mix of financial incentives and authorizations to supplement information provided to physicians. Model C is a hybrid of the other two. It will contract with provider and single-specialty organizations on a capitated basis and delegate to them responsibility for care management.
